Cahersiveen nach Waterville /
Cahersiveen to Waterville
Eight o'clock sharp the music resumes in the town of Cahersiveen. We have to admit, it's fun on one day, but if it is playing everyday it kind of gets... annoying. It feels like you're in a theme park like Disneyland, not a normal town.
Today we're leaving behind Cahersiveen. The distance to Waterville is quite long so we actually thought about taking a bus part of the way and starting somewhere in between. We asked Mary, the lady at the hostel, if the bus to Waterville would stop somewhere along the way to which she just replied: 'Why would it stop? It takes only 15 minutes.' Now that was frustrating.
We want to cut the first 8 or so kilometers so we want to call a taxi to take us to the Coars National School where the Kerry way crosses a street. Yesterday, Michael offered us to call him before we leave and he might have time to take us there. This morning he surprised us at the hostel by showing up unannounced: church service was over and he had been in the area, so he wanted to check if he could take us up to the way. We hurried and packed everything and he took us up to the National School. We were very happy and promised that on our next stay in Ireland, we'd stay at his B&B some time - it is near Cahersiveen and has a great view of the sea!
After Michael left we start climbing. Our way today leads across a range of mountains, through a valley and then across another range of mountains towards the Atlantic Ocean and Waterville. On the way there is supposed to be a post office in the small town of Mastergeehy, where we could order a taxi. We keep this option open in case we're too exhausted after the first climb.

The first mountain range is, as per usual, muddy. Anna falls twice and Iris too hits her knee pretty bad, but we have to continue. From trying to hold on to something we have whin thornes in our hands that are very uncomfortable. Only David has not fallen yet and is - aside for his feet - relatively unharmed. On our way we have to cross over a quarry with lots of warning signs (Danger!!) and we probably should keep off, but the way goes right through, so we have to cross. But it does feel a little strange. Despite it all, the way seems surprisingly easy today. The day of rest in Cahersiveen clearly paid off! We have a lot more energy and focus and despite the rough weather (rain cape on, rain cape off again, rain cape on again...) we manage to finish the first part of today rather nicely.
We reach Mastergeehy and sit down in front of the post office. It is Sunday, so everything is closed, but he have cookies and bananas so we have a small lunch break here. We can see the next mountain range from here and we are positive that we can make it, so we decide not to order a taxi but walk. maybe that was a mistake? As we continue our walk we see a french couple sitting on a pile of gravel nearby for their lunchbreak - the only dry spot they found. We had met those two before, in Black Valley and yesterday at the hostel. They, too, decide to walk.

The second climb is significantly more difficult than the first. And seems significantly longer. There is always another peak appearing before us and as we go on, our knees grow tired. We follow our way towards the coast and after a while we are on our last legs. We see that there is an old stone circle soem way beyond our mark way but we can not reach it, because there is just water and mud around us and we're afraid to sink in (David almost did once, he is still startled by that) so we do not stray from our path. It really is exhausting. But in the end we are rewarded with a view that kind of makes up for all the hardship.

Then there are the dreaded last four kilometers before we reach the town of Waterville - we are actually more crawling than walking by now. Our hostel is directly by the beach. Silver Sands Hostel is a cosy, lovely little place with a common room full of curios little things from all over the world. Anna enjoys it a lot! We may be exhausted, but we are happy. We rush through the cold wind to a restaurant to eat something as we're absolutely starving - of course we have fish, as it won't get any fresher than this (David has lobster and loves it!). The french couple are here as well, they too managed to conquer today's hike. They are the only other hikers we saw all day, which we find a bit weird... After dinner we return to the hostel and fall into our beds, we are asleep almost instantly, no waking up, no talking in our sleep, not even dreams.
had it not been for the resting day yesterday, we would not have been able to do it. That way, we are obviously exhausted, but we made it and we're proud! It took us nearly nine hours to overcome a distance the bus does in 15 minutes - but we did it!
